European Health Data Space: EUDI Wallet and Business Wallet in Action with CRANE d-HDSI

CRANE is a Pre-Commercial Procurement initiative funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (Grant No. 965277), bringing together healthcare providers, technology innovators and regulators to demonstrate what EHDS-ready infrastructure looks like in practice. Governed by Region Västerbotten, Sweden. Built by Nordic Health Innovation, iGrant.io and Redpill Linpro.

iGrant.io presented the final demo in a large PCP (Pre-Commercial Procurement) project under Horizon 2020 to the EU Commission. A production-ready, GDPR-compliant infrastructure combining citizen consent management, EUDI Wallet-based digital identity and a governed health Data Marketplace tested with real citizens, real organisations and real data across Europe.

Presenting CRANE d-HDSI: Trust-by-design architecture for unlocking data, empowering citizens and enabling wellbeing.

Seven partners from 4 European countries and three rural regions with high levels of people over the age of 65, with a common and urgent need for health and care innovation. George Padayatti (Partner and head of DevOps, iGrant.io), Lal Chandran (CTO and Co-founder, iGrant.io) and Lotta Lundin (CEO and co-founder, iGrant.io) presented a production-ready solution powered by Organisation Wallet Suite and Data Wallet, a modular infrastructure designed to bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and user experience, offering:

• Citizen consent management with real-time opt-in and opt-out via the EUDI Wallet
• Business Wallet onboarding for organisations using verifiable Legal Person IDs (LPID)
• A governed Data Marketplace with legally binding Data Disclosure Agreements
• A Data Intermediation Service Provider (DISP) enforcing consent before every data access
• Cross-border, federated data exchange: data never leaves the source
• Validated across Sweden, Norway and Spain with the participation of 70 citizens

CRANE goes beyond traditional healthcare by focusing on lifelong wellbeing, integrating prevention, nutrition, physical activity, mental resilience, and healthy lifestyles into its core approach, with initiatives like the Garden of Care helping citizens make informed decisions. At its foundation, CRANE places citizens’ data rights at the centre, ensuring individuals are the primary beneficiaries of their data, with access governed by FAIR principles and full user control.

Building on this, CRANE advances consent management beyond transactional digital wallet models, enabling a more robust, citizen-centric framework that gives individuals meaningful and effective control over how their health data is used.

Why this matters for healthcare decision makers: Healthcare providers, EHR vendors and health data holders face mandatory obligations under the EHDS by 2027 to 2029. The EUDI Wallet and Business Wallet provide the identity and trust layer on which those obligations depend. CRANE dHDSI is the infrastructure that brings them together. Today, not in 2029.
