iGrant.io at the mDL4EU Event: Making mobile driving licence (mDL) work across EUDI Wallets

Description

Mobile driving licences allow people to present proof of their right to drive using the EU Digital Identity Wallet. Their practical value depends on whether authorities and private services can reliably verify them, including when the licence, wallet, and verifier come from different national systems.

The mDL4EU Event will bring clarity to all these implementation questions. Representing iGrant.io, Lal Chandran (Co-founder and CTO) will attend on 15 October 2026, when the programme covers governance and national readiness, including engagement with Member States on cross-border acceptance.

About mDL4EU

Mobile Driving Licence for EU (mDL4EU) focuses on the connected services required to issue, hold, and verify mobile driving licences across the European wallet ecosystem. Coordinated by the University of the Aegean, the initiative brings together national issuer systems, wallet integration and verification services, supported by shared technical profiles and cross-border testing.

Its technical work covers four connected areas:

  • National issuance services: Preparing issuer backends and credential lifecycle handling for standards-based mDL issuance and wallet integration, supported by pilot evidence and logs.
  • Public and private verification: Developing verifier capabilities and onboarding approaches for authorities and private relying parties, covering both in-person and remote checks.
  • Wallet enablement: Aligning wallet-facing integration patterns, consent and user experience with shared inputs for testing.
  • Interoperability and cross-border testing: Validating standards conformance and compatibility between implementations through shared profiles and a test bed, progressing towards cross-border demonstrations and testing.

About the session

The “National Readiness: Engaging with Member States” session takes place on 15 October, 10:30-12:00. It will discuss preparations for mDL4EU’s workshop: From issuance to acceptance, getting mDLs trusted across borders and by the private sector.

The discussion connects the readiness of national programmes with the services that will issue and accept driving credentials. Its focus on both cross-border use and private-sector acceptance highlights how authorities, wallet providers, and relying parties can prepare compatible implementations.

Why this matters

For licence holders, mDL can make it easier to present driving credentials during activities such as car rentals and roadside checks, and the driver’s licence can be used outside your country of issuance. For authorities and service providers, digital verification can support more consistent checks and reduce manual document handling. The latter is especially cumbersome when the driver is from outside a member state. These benefits depend on the licence being trusted and usable by the service requesting it across national systems.

Issuing credentials, integrating them into wallets and preparing verifiers require coordinated decisions about technical compatibility, trust and user experience. Early alignment and testing can help identify gaps between implementations and provide evidence for cross-border use. mDL4EU’s programme brings these dependencies into focus, helping connect national readiness with the practical requirements of acceptance.
